Can I use Dreamweaver or FrontPage to create pages?

Generally, no. We strongly recommend using the built in Squarespace editor to manipulate your pages. If you develop code using an outside tool and wish to import the HTML content, you can paste this HTML directly into a Squarespace Page that's set to accept Raw HTML from the editor screen. We don't recommend this, as the steps involved are far too many (which is why we have built WYSIWYG editors for use on the web).

Can I have multiple blogs within my Squarespace site?

Yes, you can. Squarespace sites are constructed by snapping together Squarespace Pages and Widgets -- so you can have multiple blogs by putting more than one Journal page on your website. However, it should be noted that these blogs can not have a totally separate navigation structure -- which means that both blogs will appear to be from the same website.

What's in a navigation structure?

Your navigation structure is one of the most critical aspects of your site - it defines how users get around to view your content. If a navigation structure is too complicated or it doesn't get the user to where they need to be quickly enough the user will leave the site and never come back. On the other hand, useful navigation structures that also look and feel cool will make users come back for more.

Navigation structures can look very different on today's websites - huge portals like Yahoo have links all over the place that take you closer and closer to where you want to be. Retailers like to put product categories on the left hand side of their sites allowing you easy access to get to what you want. Personal websites typically have a menu that appears on the left, right, or top of the site containing links to all of the different types of content that the person has chosen to put on his/her site. Your navigation structure in Squarespace is completely defined by your layout. Most basic layouts list your pages down either the left or the right hand side, but if you decide to create your own layout, there are no limits!

Can I decide where sections appear on my site?

Your navigation structure - what it looks like and where it appears - is controlled by the layout you have chosen. You can move pages and sections around within your structure via drag and drop. If you choose to customize your layout, you'll be able to edit the HTML templates behind your page directly. This allows advanced users to have even more control over positioning, while still being able to take advantage of the management system behind Squarespace.

What's an initial page? How do I set the front page for my site?

An initial page, at the top level of your site structure, is the page that will be displayed when users access the root of your website (that is, they do not request any particular page from your site). If you're specifying an initial page for a folder, this page will be used for a similar purpose.

You can set the front page for your site in the page configuration, by navigating to the page you want to set as your front page. Click the cubes icon in the upper right corner of your screen to switch to Structure Editing mode. Click the configure button at the top of your page, and click the button to set as front at the bottom of the configuration screen. See this guide for help with accessing your page configuration.

Note:

1. Your site front page can't be added to a folder. If the front page you want to use is added to a folder within your site, you'll need to move this out as a separate navigation item.

2. You cannot use a single link page as the front page, since this is a link and does not have a page of its own.

3. The page you use must be enabled to display as your front page, see Step 5 of this guide.

How do I make a single page with a picture on it?

You'll want to place your photo in the general storage section of your website manager located at [Data & Media > File Storage]. After uploading it, create a page and click to edit it on your website. On the editor, you should see a button for linking the image from your file storage area.

See this illustrated guide for more help with adding a page, and you can add an image using the instructions in this guide.

How do I add advertising code or other HTML code to my navigation bar?

Follow these steps to embed advertising or HTML code into your navigation bar:

  1. Within Architecture (Structure in your site manager), press the Add Section button where you'd like to add your HTML code. Within Squarespace, a Section represents a chunk on your navigation bar.
  2. Name your Section and click Create Section. This will add a new section to your site.
  3. After returning to Architecture, Select Add Widget within your section, and insert a new HTML Widget. Your HTML widget will contain your HTML code.
  4. Return to your site, and click "Edit HTML" above the content you just added to your navigation bar. You'll also want to set the editor to Raw HTML to paste in your content, so that the browser does not interfere with the code you enter.

Please be careful when adding custom HTML to your site! If you forget to close a tag, your entire site may not display correctly until your inserted code is valid.

We also have an illustrated guide for adding code to your sidebar here.

If you simply want to move a single entry up or down in the entry list you can change the date or time stamp to place this where you'd like it to appear in the list.  See this FAQ entry for instructions on changing the journal date.

How do I setup a Drop Box so that people can upload files to me?

By default a Drop Box points to your File Storage folder, but you can change this so that it points to a subfolder you've created within your General Storage folder or even another folder entirely. The most important step in setting up a Drop Box properly though are the permissions settings you define for the Drop Box itself and, if you decide to use one, the folder as well. These permission settings will vary depending upon if you want a public or private Drop Box.

Public Drop Box - If you want a public Drop Box, set the Drop Box to "visible" and the folder to "storage only" (so that people cannot browse the contents of the folder).

Private Drop Box - Under your Public Audience, set both target folders as "restricted", but under your private members Audience (whatever you decide to call it) set the Drop Box to "visible" and the Folder to "storage only".

Can I display all journal comments on the main journal page?

Squarespace journals can be presented in one of two main display modes: Normal mode and single entry mode. In normal mode, comments for your entries are only available in the individual journal entry view. Visitors can click the comments link or journal entry title to view the comments listed for your entry. In single entry mode, your individual entry will display in full on the main journal page.

This setting can be changed from your Journal's configuration area, see this guide.
