Why don't my images display when I log out of my site?

If you've restricted your File Storage to the public, any images/files you've stored there won't display when you're logged out. You can change your File Storage settings to storage only from [Website Management > Members & Access > Member Permissions].

I can't login, but I'm sure I'm entering the correct password. What's going on?

There are a number of reasons why your browser could be incapable of logging in to the Squarespace system. It's most likely one of the following:

  1. First, make sure you are using the correct login name. Your site login is the initial part of your Squarespace URL. So, if your site is http://<login>.squarespace.com/, you should use the name <login> to get to your website.
  2. Second, temporarily disable web accelerator software and firewall software (Zone Alarm is especially bad). After seeing many support requests -- we find that this step solves 99% of login issues. Make sure you have the latest version of your browser, and that you have cookies enabled. You'll also need JavaScript enabled to use Squarespace. The browsers Squarespace supports are at ( browser-support ).
  3. If you can't get IE to work, we strongly recommend trying Firefox, as that might mean your IE install is corrupted by spyware. Try removing spyware from your computer.
  4. If you've mapped a domain to your Squarespace site (that is, you're accessing http://www.yourdomain.com/ instead of your Squarespace domain), make sure you are NOT using URL forwarding. Our Domain Setup FAQ contains methods for properly setting up your domain with our service.
  5. If you're behind a company firewall, this could be causing the problem with your login -- you should attempt logging in when not behind a firewall.

I can't upload files.

If you're using Internet Explorer, the problem is likely that your browser is not loading the ActiveX upload component, either due to security restrictions or due to a conflict with other software you have installed.

You can disable the ActiveX uploading on Squarespace via: [Structure > Website Settings > Editing/Commenting] in your web site manager interface.

What is the maximum file size I can upload?

Squarespace reliably supports uploads up to 10 - 30MB in size. Many users are able to upload larger files, but uploading via a web browser is somewhat unreliable with very large files. Also keep in mind that most cable modems and DSL connections upload at 15 kbps, which means that uploading files progresses at approximately 1MB/minute.

If you wish to host very large files, you may consider a specialized solution, such as a CDN (Content Delivery Network) or Amazon.com's S3 service.

It seems as if my site is loading slowly. This wasn't the case when I signed up. What might be happening?

The main reason why Squarespace sites can load slowly is if you've included external scripts and widgets in your sidebar that must load before your page can be rendered. When you embed content from 3rd parties, each 3rd party server must be contacted to download the presentation for your page before it can load. Removing 3rd party widgets will speed up your page load times greatly.

If you have included large images (80K+), this can also adversely affect page loading.

How do I clear my browser cache?

From Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options > Delete Files -- then select "Delete All Offline Content", and click OK.

From Firefox, this option is in Tools > Clear Private Data and select "Cache".

From Safari, click the "Safari" menu, the select "Empty Cache".

Why are my side navigation pages appearing in a row at the top of my site when I log out?

This is most likely occurring because you currently have horizontal navigation enabled on your site, but you haven't added any pages to that horizontal navigation section. When this is enabled, it will look for the first "section" within your sidebar1 that contains pages and this will become your horizontal navigation bar by default.

You can change your layout so that you do not have horizontal navigation enabled from Style Editor > Banner and Navigation. We have a guide for changing your layout settings here.
