Domain Mapping (General Instructions)
With Squarespace, you can map your own web domain name to your site with our Domain Mapping feature. Please note, this feature is not available with our Basic plan. You must upgrade your account to Pro or higher to access this service.
Want to use www.yourname.com (instead of yourname.squarespace.com)? Essentially, you'll need to purchase the domain www.yourname.com and create a pointer within your provider's interface to point the domain to us.
Step 1 - Purchase A Domain Name
We highly recommend Nettica for domain hosting, as they make this process quite easy, but whoever you chose, be sure they offer complete DNS management. Don't fall for cheap registration + URL Forwarding gimmicks! This method will prevent cookies from being set (breaking your login) as well as your site from being indexed on search engines properly.
Step 2 - Create a CNAME Record
Log in to your domain registrar's site, and locate the 'Zone File Settings', 'DNS Manager' or similar area of your control panel. Here you will create a CNAME record that points your domain to us. You'll generally see three fields:
Alias - Should be 'www'
(indicating that the www.yourdomain.com record should point to Squarespace.)
Type - Should be 'CNAME'
(indicating that you would like to point to Squarespace by using it's name.)
Points To - Should be 'www.squarespace.com'
(do not use your Squarespace site address!)
Step 3 - Set Up Domain Mapping
Log in to your Squarespace site manager. Within the Structure & Style > Domain Mapping area, create two records -- www.yourname.com and yourname.com. Be sure to use lowercase letters and no spaces.
Finally, set your www.yourname.com record as the primary.
Step 4 (Optional)
Occasionally we see support tickets from customers who are using a domain registrar that doesn't provide full DNS support. In some cases, this may result in your site not pointing if someone leaves the "www" out of your URL. To correct this, ask your registrar to create a CNAME that points yourname.com (no www) to www.yourname.com. If this service is unavailable, you will need to create an A record that points to 69.28.242.163 (our IP address.)
PLEASE NOTE: These types of DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate through the Internet.
